The IAM’s Spanish Leadership Program at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center was the topic this week in Washington D.C.’s preeminent Spanish language newspaper, El Tiempo Latino.
The Machinists Union’s effort to promote and increase leadership by our Spanish-speaking members is the result of more than a decade of development by the Spanish Leadership Working Group.
“When the students are here we have six full-time instructors that all come from the workplace,” said IAM Education Representative Edmundo Osorio. “We encourage them to raise their voices in their communities and to consider human rights, to do so without fear employer retaliation, because it is important that they feel confident and understand their protection under the labor laws, that they know their rights and know what they can and cannot do.”
Throughout 2018, Spanish courses will include Leadership I, Leadership II, Advanced Leadership, Collective Bargaining, Organizing and Train-the-Trainer. The first course, Spanish Leadership I, will take place March 11–16.
