50 years ago today, two sanitation workers were crushed to death in a faulty city-owned trash truck. The event marked a pivotal moment in labor rights as the city’s sanitation workers went on strike and demanded better pay and safer working conditions. The event came to a crescendo when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. flew to Memphis and marched with the strikers, who eventually won a better contract.
