A group of technicians and service employees at Ryder Truck Rental in Davenport, Iowa recently voted to join the IAM.
Ryder, best known for its fleet of rental trucks, specializes in transportation and supply chain management throughout the U.S. and internationally. The technicians at the Davenport facility perform in-house maintenance work on the trucks, as well as roadside assistance. The service employees fuel, change tires and wash the trucks.
“Their main issue was respect,” said IAM Midwest Territory Special Representative Chris Tucker, lead organizer on the campaign. “They wanted to be treated like human beings. They wanted safety, consistency on rules, a reliable pay scale for improvement, and an on-the-job training program to get to the top of the pay scale.”
“On behalf of the IAM Midwest Territory, I’d like to welcome to the IAM the workers of Ryder Truck Rental in Davenport, Iowa,” said General Vice President Steve Galloway. “This campaign was driven by six employees – three of which who are in their 20s and three over the age of 40. Even with the large generation gap, they worked together for a common goal – to gain respect. Respect for them all. This shows that no matter the age – young workers and older workers – if we all stand together we can work to improve all of our lives.”
“Thank you to IAM Midwest Territory Special Representative Chris Tucker, who served as lead organizer on this campaign, as well as IAM Grand Lodge Representative and Territory Organizing Lead Geny Ulloa and IAM District 6 Organizer Gary Pickett for working hard to help Ryder employees secure a better future for themselves and their families.”
