International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8. It is a global day that honors the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a “call to action” to increase gender equality.
This Sunday, the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), along with the IAM and other ITF-affiliated unions, will be leading the call by demanding that governments ratify the new International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention on violence and harassment at work.
“International Women’s Day is about empowering people to actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias and celebrate women’s achievements,” said General Vice President Sito Pantoja. “The IAM will always fight to ensure that our members work in an environment free from any discrimination, violence or intimidation.”
Convention 190 (C190) is the first ever labor standard that sets a clear framework to end violence and harassment at work. Workers, unions, governments and employers made history by adopting new ILO Convention 190 on violence and harassment in June 2019.
“Much progress has been made to protect and promote women’s rights in recent times. However, nowhere in the world can women claim to have all the same rights and opportunities as men,” added GVP Pantoja. “The IAM is proud to join the fight in getting C190 ratified.”
C190 acknowledges that gender-based violence and harassment disproportionately affects women and girls, and recognizes that tackling the underlying causes and risk factors, including gender stereotypes, multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination, and unequal gender-based power relations, is essential to ending violence and harassment in the world of work.
