IAM District 8 recently gave back to an organization that helps thousands of homeless people in the Aurora, IL area. Hesed House is the second largest homeless shelter in the state.
IAM District 8 members traveled from all over the Chicagoland area to volunteer for the district’s first “IAM H.E.L.P.S. in the Community” event. Union volunteers did a range of work from laying carpet, building walls, taking items to the junk yard, and landscaping just to name few.
“The IAM H.E.L.P.S. event at Hesed House was a tremendous success,” said IAM District 8 Directing Business Representative Steve Jones. “I send deep thanks to all the volunteers from District 8, Locals 49, 126, 1202, 1553 and Grand Lodge Representative Marty St. Peters from the Midwest office, who put their sweat and labor of love into helping such a necessary community organization. Hesed House provides shelter and programs for the homeless to help them reintegrate back into the community and I couldn’t be more proud of the effort by our members in helping such a great organization.”
IAM District 8 Organizer Osmel Toledo serves as the IAM H.E.L.P.S. Coordinator for the district. He says this event was about giving back to a community that has given so much to the IAM.
“We wanted to choose a place where our District 8 members could make a difference,” said Toledo. “That place was Hesed House in Aurora. The community rallied around the IAMAW during the tragic loss of our members from IAM Local 1202 at the Henry Pratt plant earlier this year. So, we felt our IAM H.E.L.P.S. program could give back to that same community by volunteering at Hesed House which helps so many in the area.”
“Congratulations to IAM District 8 on such a successful H.E.L.P.S. event,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Steve Galloway. “This is what this program is all about. The fulfilling feeling of giving back and helping those around us is unparalleled – especially for a community that pours so much of itself into its residents and comes together to help those in their time of need.”
IAM H.E.L.P.S. stands for Honoring, Engaging, Lifting, Providing and Servicing. The Midwest Territory program is in its third year of service. For more on IAM H.E.L.P.S. click here.
